Chapter 16

Philip

I’d spent years in hospitals, between my studying and my residency, but never before had I hated one so much as now.

Familiar white walls closed in, suffocating me as I paced a short path across the waiting room. Drew still sat in my arms, face buried in my throat as tiny arms locked tight around my neck.

I’d almost called Mom to come get him, but the terrified and watery orbs brushed the thought to the side as quickly as it came. He’d be even more scared away from me, and right now, I wasn’t afraid to admit I needed him too.

Images played as if on repeat behind my eyelids, Gina all but lunging to Drew, covering him through the attack and then the red slowly inching out to coat the side of her blouse. There were so many organs that could be injured on that side of her body.

The wound had looked superficial, but I hadn’t exactly gotten a chance to check it over fully. What if it was worse than I thought?

What if I lost her?

My hands tightened around Drew, the jittery panic dragging claws up my back as I fought to stay calm. Panicking wouldn’t help anyone, least of all Gina. I needed to stay steady and wait for news.

Risking a glance at the clock, I bit back a groan. It’s already been over an hour since they brought her back there. The part of me that’d been trained for these things started listing off all the things that could be wrong.

Blood loss, organ failure, and ruptured arteries were all equally lethal in the wrong circumstances, and with every new scenario, my stomach dropped lower.

On my fiftieth round of pacing the room, Drew spoke, voice small and wavering. “Will Gina be okay?”

The tone tore at my heartstrings and I fished for something both truthful and comforting. I couldn’t lie to him and say everything was alright–obviously, it wasn’t–but I couldn’t even think of the worst-case scenario right now.

Thinking about it made it too real, too plausible.

So I settled on, “I don’t know, but she’s strong.”

Drew’s lips pinched, the lower one wobbling even as he nodded. “She’ll be okay. She has to be.”

Tucking him closer, I tried to believe that even as doubts and fears soured my stomach. The next hour-long wait was excruciating, every second dragging like a day, before finally the doors opened and out came one of the nurses.

A smile curled her lips, honey eyes soft and warm as she nodded. “You can breathe, boys, your girl is just fine.”

Relief hit with the force of a truck, nearly buckling my knees out from under me as I pulled in a shaky breath.

There, see? She was fine.

I exchanged a glance with Drew, his smile coming back to all but beam up at me, and then the nurse continued, blowing away my happiness under a gust of utter disbelief.

“And the baby is too. We were worried for a bit there, but you’ve got two fighters on your hands.
