Academically, she got by, but her years at Trinity were significant in other ways. She established her identity, understood who she was, and became more grounded. In 1992, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and then moved to Manhattan Beach, a scenic beach town outside Los Angeles. Then, before Sue could begin a job search, a request came from Taiwan. Her uncles were preparing a joint business venture with a company in California. They knew Sue had taken some law classes at university, and they wanted her to look over the legal documents before they signed the deal. (After the loss of their visionary and medically trained brother, Bruce, they’d been forced to simplify their plan, manufacturing more basic mobility products such as walkers and canes.) Sue read the contract carefully and deemed it one-sided. She strongly advised her uncles to reject it. Her uncles were upset – with her. They were not used to women possessing business knowledge, and they made Sue feel foolish. Frustrated, Sue phoned her grandfather, who respected her opinion and distrusted the Californian businessmen. Her grandfather was a tough man, but he valued family. He suggested Sue start a U.S. company to distribute the mobility products. He was serious.
