I love books, by which I mean actual printed-on-paper books, not ebooks or anything you need a computer or a software app to read. I love the fact that a paperback is easy to carry around, I don’t have to worry about dropping it on the floor, I won’t ever need to search for an electrical outlet to recharge it, and I can read it just about anywhere, day or night. Well, maybe not in actual night, but you get the idea. I like being able to tell exactly how far along I am just by comparing the two sides in my hands and I like not knowing what comes next until I turn the page. Books are the perfect entertainment medium.
I also love book stores. All those colorful covers and bold titles neatly arranged in alphabetical order make it easy to find what I’m looking for while still letting me stumble across a whole new author or series or genre. I could spend hours in a book store just wandering around, browsing through the shelves and racks and tables to discover the next tale that will transport me away to another place and time.
You’d think I’d love libraries even more, since they also have books and they’re free, but I don’t. To me, libraries are dry, sterile places sparsely populated by old people on a budget, parents looking for something to keep their rug rats entertained for a few hours, or desperate souls searching for obscure references that, for whatever reason, aren’t available online. Since their budgets are limited, library collections are way behind what’s available in the stores, so there’s really nothing there I want to read. I doubt anyone in my generation has ever voluntarily set foot inside a public library or even knows where one is.
I’m sure most librarians aren’t anything at all like the stereotypical gray-haired prune-faced biddy whose only utterance is Shh! I imagine a lot of them have degrees in literature or library science, they probably actually enjoy helping patrons find whatever it is they’re looking for, and I’m sure most of them lead rich and rewarding lives at work and at home. I also strongly suspect that virtually none of them are witches.
