Back in my room, I put the receiver beside the bath and start to run water into the sparkling white ceramic tub. I could do with a soak. I want to check over those bruises, and my left arm still hurts. The warm water might just relax my taut muscles. There’s a knock on the door. I’m still decent, so I call out over the sound of the gushing taps. ‘Yeah, come in.’

It’s probably Luke. We didn’t have a debrief after I got here. In fact, it felt more like he was avoiding me. But to my surprise, it’s not Luke.

‘I wanted to apologise.’ Erica hovers just inside the doorway.

This is a real shocker. I had her marked down as one of those women who have no idea how to say the word sorry.

‘Yes.’ Her voice sounds a little breathy. I get the feeling she’s not used to admitting she’s wrong. ‘I didn’t mean to be…’ she hesitates, ‘hostile. It’s just that it’s been a very stressful time.’ She holds her hands, awkward and limp, across the same plaid skirt she’s been wearing all day; like a child who finds her limbs an embarrassment. It’s not every day you lose a mother and a sister, or niece, or whatever it is they called Miri – a best friend? I wonder sadly.

‘I know,’ I say. ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to impose. Luke thought it would be a good idea – dilute things. Maybe he was wrong.’

‘No. Not at all. We’ve talked it over. We’ve all decided, we’d like you to stay. Julia’s very keen as well.’

I hadn’t heard anyone go upstairs, but then I had been in with Timmy.

‘So please, just stay as long as you like.’
