Chapter 12
I stared at the cats sitting in front of me on the ground. All of them were here except for Lolaâthank goodness. I didnât think I could handle having the one who got me in the most trouble being present as well. She might have just as well congratulated Luna on her whole display at the fish shop.
âWe arenât doing that again. Absolutely no way.â
Before I could scold Luna more about what not to do when in public just in case we ever needed to go out again, the doorbell rang, drawing my attention. Freezing for a second, hoping it wasnât the fish guy who might have followed me home, I got up from the couch and peeked through the peephole.
âWho is it?â Dream asked as I watched Alec shift from side to side outside.
âAlec.â
I peeped at the man once more, pressing my lips tightly as I looked at Dream and then at Alec again as he knocked on my door. Alec was outside and Dream was insideâwho was his cat. I could not be found with his cat inside my house! Would he think I was kidnapping his cat? There would be no way anyone would not confuse me with being a cat whisperer if news got out.
âYou need to hide.â
âWhy does Dream need to hide?â
âBecause Dream is not supposed to be in my house.â
âDream is not allowed to be here?â
I let loose an exhausted sigh at the cat at my feet. Dealing with cats was going to send me to an early grave. I shouldnât have to reason with them. If they werenât supposed to be here, then they shouldnât be here. I was the human, and it was supposed to be my way or the highway.
âDream would like to greet Alec.â
âDream cannot,â I responded. My irritation was growing and I couldnât believe I was starting to talk like Dream too. I needed to solve this case as soon as possible. I picked up the fluffy cat and sped straight to my bedroom. Setting her on the ground and instructing her to not make a noise, I closed the bedroom door only to open the front door a few seconds later.
âI thought you might not be home.â
âI was just taking care of some business.â Business that involved his talking cat.
âI got a phone call about some lady asking questions about me and her cat getting lose in the fish shopâ¦â
âYes, that sounds like what had happened,â I answered with a sheepish grin as I stood to the side to let him in. Despite having the urge to usher him away so he didnât find out about Dream being locked in my bedroom, I was curious about the call he had received. Because of Luna I had not been able to gather much evidence against the fish shop owner, too busy dealing with secondhand embarrassment. This case needed solving, and it wasnât going to happen on its own.
âWhy did you bring a cat to a fish shop?â
âItâs a long story.
