Chapter Thirteen

Thursday afternoon, Beck walked by Mendoza’s office and subtly glanced inside as she strode past. She hadn’t seen a sign of her all day, but she wanted to make extra sure Mendoza wouldn’t pop up while she was out.

Foster was sitting at his desk and looked up when she walked in. “You done with all the new files?”

“Yep. Every last one.”

He gave a low whistle. “I’m impressed.”

She’d run through the new files quickly now that she was in a rhythm, but she still had plenty of the backlogged work waiting, having established a method of working through one box of old, then one box of new, rotating back and forth to keep a balance between being bored out of her mind by antiquated files and intrigued by cases that had a chance of catching fresh eyes.

Not that it really mattered if there was a method at all since no one was doing anything with the information other than cataloguing it. A not very well-trained monkey could do what she was doing, and the idea she was stuck here indefinitely for doing the right thing on the street galled her. But Foster wasn’t to blame and taking it out on him wasn’t going to solve her problems. “Thanks. I guess you could say I’m in a groove.” She glanced back at Mendoza’s office door. “Is she coming in today?”

“Why? You thinking about playing hooky?”

The insight was jarring, but she smiled to cover. “As if. I’ve got an appointment.” She cast about for an excuse. “You know, to talk about the case,” she added, content to let him think she was visiting the prosecutor on Jack’s case rather than a reporter.

He waved his hands in a shooing motion. “Go, go. Nothing’s happening here that can’t wait.”

She took his advice and rushed out of the office. Thankfully, for her anyway, Foster’s doctor had delayed his return to active duty, meaning he was available to serve as her buffer for a while longer. If she had to deal with Mendoza one on one for the duration of her time here, she might wind up quitting the force.

Her meeting with Macy was on the other side of town, but she made it to the Lakewood branch of the library in record time. She was glancing around, looking for Macy in the lobby, when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned to face a slender, attractive redhead with an easy smile.

“Detective Ramsey?”

This stranger was the first person to use her new title as an address, and it was disconcerting. Was she really a detective when she wasn’t doing any detecting? She nodded slowly while she chewed on the existential question.

“Follow me, please.”

The woman started walking into the belly of the library, leading her past rows of books and carrels and a group of children who were seated in a circle, listening to a story. Soon, they were standing in front of a closed door in the very back of the building. The woman knocked on the door, two quick raps, and after a few seconds, opened the door a few inches.
