It was all I could do to get the car door open fast enough. Jerome trotted up to Morgan and burrowed his head in her midsection—his version of a hug.

"Young lady, you've got some explaining to do," K.C. said.

"Whoa." Tyler Jacobs appeared from inside the barn.

K.C. looked at Tyler, then at me. "Quincy, what did I say I would do if I ever ran into this kid again?" She glared him down. "You stay right there. I've got a little surprise in the trunk."

"Let's everybody just calm down," I said. I was pretty sure the surprise K.C. was referring to was her Louisville Slugger. She never left home without it.

K.C. took her sunglasses off. "Morgan, you lied to me. This isn't your home, is it?"

"I didn't say it was. I just asked you to bring me here."

"Is that sass? And here I thought we were pals. I feel like I've been horn-swaggled." Neither kid changed expression, they had no idea what she was saying. "Lied to, back-stabbed, betrayed." At least one of those sunk in. Morgan's bottom lip trembled.

Jerome whined and put his paw on Morgan's leg.

"I'm going to call your mom, so she can tell the police to never mind," I said. I was angry at Morgan myself, for making her mom worry.

I made the call and told Stacie we'd bring Morgan home. When I hung up I could still feel my heart pumping. How did parents deal with this kind of stuff?

We went inside so Morgan could collect her things. By her body language, I could tell she was upset. I just wasn't sure with whom and why, yet. Was she mad at us for finding her, or herself? Tyler? Or possibly, none of the above.

We'd walked into an apartment with a loft. A kitchenette at the back of the room, sturdy pine railings and stairs leading upstairs. There was an over-stuffed couch in a country red checked print with calico print pillows in country blue and red. A faux cowhide rug and coffee table made of broad white-washed planks sat in front of the couch.

"What in thee hell has been going on here?" I said. I feared the worst.

"Nothing, geez," Tyler said in classic offended teenager style.

"We're hiding out," Morgan said.

"Is this your house?" K.C. asked Tyler.

"No, it's my aunt's office. She has an interior design business. Before you start yelling at us, nothing happened, like, you know." Tyler nodded at the staircase and flicked his gaze there for a moment.

Morgan cringed and made an ick kind of face. It seemed like her natural reaction, so I felt like they were telling the truth about any hanky-panky. (Ugh, did I just sound about a hundred years old?)

"Okay. That's a start," K.C. said. She was all business. "You sit there," she said to Morgan and pointed to one end of the couch. "And you sit over there." She directed Tyler to the other end. Jerome gulped and plopped his tail-end down as soon as he heard the first "sit.
