Musée d'Orsay is located within steps of the Seine. Lucy made a beeline for it when she left the museum. The day had turned hot while she was indoors, and she hoped for a breeze off the river.

She watched a river tour boat pass by in front of her as she pulled out her phone.

"Hi, Hester. Hey, I know we're meeting later, but you got a second to answer a question?"

"Of course," Hester's honeyed voice answered.

"Did you and Jean-Luc ever have anything going on? Even a little flirtation?"

The line was silent long enough that the tour boat had disappeared under a bridge before Hester spoke.

"No, we didn't. However, I must admit that Jean-Luc had once been quite clear that he would have liked one."

Lucy nodded to herself and grinned. "That's exactly what I thought you were going to say. Thank you, Hester. I'll see you in a little bit."

Lucy's best friend was brilliant. Beautiful. Kind to a fault. And the woman was incapable of lying, with the exception of one occasion when it meant finding a murderer. But in her regular day to day life, Hester could not even utter the smallest, most benign white lies. Lucy had known that she would never obfuscate the truth about her friendship with Jean-Luc.

Suddenly, Juliet had one of the most compelling motives of any possible suspect.

Not only was she angry with her lover's inability to commit, but he had spent an important evening with a woman Juliet was already jealous of, when instead he should have had her on his arm at his big charity gala.

No wonder Oscar said Juliet had been spitting mad at Jean-Luc.

That kind of sudden-onset anger can lead to crimes of passion.

Such as murder.
