Chapter Ten

I’d not paid much attention to my phone over the last week or so as it wasn’t a big part of my life. Truthfully the only time I’d ever needed it was back when I was with Rissa as she insisted on texting constantly. I rarely received or sent texts to Sophia. We were usually together, or we were working. Both busy and knowing the other was trustworthy.

I couldn’t even remember the last time I’d even looked at it and was startled to hear it go off. I was still half asleep, so I asked Sophia to check who it was calling as the thing sat on her side of the bed.

She looked at it and I could see her face go from relaxed to angry. She glared at the phone as it rang a few more times then looked over at me with a weary glance.

“It’s Rissa.” She said with an apprehension. “Do you want to answer it?”

I scrunched my nose and shook my head.

She hit the decline button and settled back into bed with a small smile. I scooted closer to her and tried to fall back asleep, but the phone rang again. Sophia hit the decline button again and glared at the phone for a few minutes until it rang once more.

“Just turn it off,” I mumbled. “There is no reason for me to talk to her.”

Sophia picked up the phone and went to power if off but stopped and creased her brow instead. She looked alarmed.

“What?” I was awake now, not liking the expression Sophia was making.

“You have like five hundred texts from her,” She turned the phone to me showing the small icon and its three-digit number alert. “When was the last time you looked at your phone?”

I shrugged. “A few days ago. Just delete them. I’m not going to respond to anything she has to say. Not after what she did. She could have killed Chris.”

Turning off the phone Sophia put it into her drawer. “We need to get you a new phone tomorrow. This can’t keep going on.”

“I don’t want a new phone,” I settled back down and poked Sophia until she did too. “I’ll just give the classes and important things your number. Or Carol’s.”

“And what if you need it in an emergency?” Sophia countered, “If you don’t want a new phone then fine. I’ll trade with you.”

“Then she’ll just harass you,” I was falling back asleep and grumbling into the blanket halfheartedly.

“Let her try,” Sophia smoothed out my hair and went back to reading her book.

I closed my eyes and let myself drift back off to sleep. Hearing what I thought was Sophia’s voice say, “She’ll regret trying to take back what is mine now.”

The next morning was a mess.

Chris was inconsolable and had a fever. He couldn’t keep anything down and no matter what I tried he didn’t seem to want to eat. I made him a doctor’s appointment. Sophia and I sat in the waiting room, both terrified and unsure about what to do.
