Chapter 6

Cam was uncomfortable. Ryan looked about the same as he had in school, though older—they all did.

“Cam, what do you do nowadays?” Ryan leaned forward between the front seats. The car smelled of manure—no surprise since they’d filled every available space with a bucket of it.

“I’m a social worker.”

Ryan pursed his lips and nodded but didn’t comment.

“And you’re a painter?”

“Yup, you ever need someone to splash some paint around, I’m your guy.” He winked which made Cam look away.

“Hey, is Camilla still in town?”

Cam swung around to glare at him. “Yeah, why?”

Ryan raised his hands, palms up. “No reason, just curious.”

“She’s married and has two daughters.”

Ryan whistled and then grinned.

Cam looked at Grayson, wondering how to reply if he should reply at all. Grayson was focusing on the traffic which was a good thing since he was the one driving, but he was amused, and Camden scowled at him. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re laughing at me.”

Grayson shook his head, but a smile stretched his lips. Then he looked into the rear-view mirror at Ryan. “Are you coming home with us or should I drop you off at your place? I can make lunch.”

“As awesome as it sounds, I think I’ll pass. This smell is getting to me, and Cam can help you unload the shit. I’m afraid of what might be crawling around in these buckets. Did you see the worms? Huge.”

Grayson raised an eyebrow. “Pussy.”

“Smells far better than this.”

Both Cam and Grayson scrunched their faces, and Ryan barked a laugh. “So that’s how it is, ey?” He continued to chuckle most of the way to his apartment.

They had to unload a couple of buckets to let Ryan out from the back seat.

“Thanks for the help, man.” Grayson squeezed Ryan’s shoulder. It wasn’t the first time they’d touched during the day. Cam didn’t believe there was anything romantic between them, but it made him realize he didn’t have anyone who touched him. Lori might grab his arm in the office, but not often, and definitely not in the carefree way Ryan and Grayson touched each other.

“I’ll call you later.” Ryan nodded at Grayson before stepping away. “Nice seeing you, Cam.”

Cam raised a hand and waved. “Eh…you too.”

Grayson climbed into the car again. “Ready to get your hands dirty?”

“Not really.”

The amused glint in Grayson’s eyes had Cam shaking his head. How had he ended up in a car filled with horse manure and Grayson? He winced; glad he’d left his phone at home.

“I’ll make you lunch if you help me unload this. I’ll add it to the garden beds this afternoon.”

“You don’t have to cook.”

“I like cooking, and you helped. You should get some kind of reward.”

Cam’s heart sped up. “Watching you work will be rewarding enough.”

“Ha!”

They drove the rest of the way in silence. It wasn’t tense, but it gave Cam time to think. He fidgeted. Restlessness made his legs itch. How many times had Camilla called? He wouldn’t see Mom no matter what. He could never forgive the shame she’d caused him.
