Chapter 6
Cam was uncomfortable. Ryan looked about the same as he had in school, though olderâthey all did.
âCam, what do you do nowadays?â Ryan leaned forward between the front seats. The car smelled of manureâno surprise since theyâd filled every available space with a bucket of it.
âIâm a social worker.â
Ryan pursed his lips and nodded but didnât comment.
âAnd youâre a painter?â
âYup, you ever need someone to splash some paint around, Iâm your guy.â He winked which made Cam look away.
âHey, is Camilla still in town?â
Cam swung around to glare at him. âYeah, why?â
Ryan raised his hands, palms up. âNo reason, just curious.â
âSheâs married and has two daughters.â
Ryan whistled and then grinned.
Cam looked at Grayson, wondering how to reply if he should reply at all. Grayson was focusing on the traffic which was a good thing since he was the one driving, but he was amused, and Camden scowled at him. âWhat?â
âNothing.â
âYouâre laughing at me.â
Grayson shook his head, but a smile stretched his lips. Then he looked into the rear-view mirror at Ryan. âAre you coming home with us or should I drop you off at your place? I can make lunch.â
âAs awesome as it sounds, I think Iâll pass. This smell is getting to me, and Cam can help you unload the shit. Iâm afraid of what might be crawling around in these buckets. Did you see the worms? Huge.â
Grayson raised an eyebrow. âPussy.â
âSmells far better than this.â
Both Cam and Grayson scrunched their faces, and Ryan barked a laugh. âSo thatâs how it is, ey?â He continued to chuckle most of the way to his apartment.
They had to unload a couple of buckets to let Ryan out from the back seat.
âThanks for the help, man.â Grayson squeezed Ryanâs shoulder. It wasnât the first time theyâd touched during the day. Cam didnât believe there was anything romantic between them, but it made him realize he didnât have anyone who touched him. Lori might grab his arm in the office, but not often, and definitely not in the carefree way Ryan and Grayson touched each other.
âIâll call you later.â Ryan nodded at Grayson before stepping away. âNice seeing you, Cam.â
Cam raised a hand and waved. âEhâ¦you too.â
Grayson climbed into the car again. âReady to get your hands dirty?â
âNot really.â
The amused glint in Graysonâs eyes had Cam shaking his head. How had he ended up in a car filled with horse manure and Grayson? He winced; glad heâd left his phone at home.
âIâll make you lunch if you help me unload this. Iâll add it to the garden beds this afternoon.â
âYou donât have to cook.â
âI like cooking, and you helped. You should get some kind of reward.â
Camâs heart sped up. âWatching you work will be rewarding enough.â
âHa!â
They drove the rest of the way in silence. It wasnât tense, but it gave Cam time to think. He fidgeted. Restlessness made his legs itch. How many times had Camilla called? He wouldnât see Mom no matter what. He could never forgive the shame sheâd caused him.
