Chapter Eighteen

When Amelia got to the office Monday morning, she’d gotten her head on straight, prepared for whatever Charlie expected from her today. She knew what she hoped for, but she was unsure of things. The gift she’d bought Charlie left her with a delicious reminder of her hopes concerning him. And with every moment he didn’t look at her, a definite disappointment.

Gingerly settling in her chair, she shoved her bag underneath the desk and checked his schedule for the day. It was becoming a habit she’d forced upon herself. Not because it was necessary, but because it was professional to not gape at visitors like a fish when they came in and announced an appointment.

He rarely had appointments come into the office, but today’s calendar showed he was booked solid all morning. She looked up in surprise at him, staring through the window to his office. He was seated at his desk, his jacket off, but shirtsleeves rolled down and his cufflinks in place. His hair was as neat as it had been every morning he’d come in, like it was freshly combed.

He was not the island man she’d spent last week with. Not right now. Right now, he was the powerful businessman who got things done. And she wondered how long it would take him to notice her, her gift, or if she would just give up and go get rid of it before he noticed anything.

She squelched the feelings of desire she had flowing through her body at the memories of the week. He’d showed her things she didn’t know she was capable of. And his actions had promised more dark delights to come.

Unfortunately, now, he looked busy, so she got up and made him a cup of coffee. She was desperate for him to look at her, be reminded of the things they’d done, feel some sort of warmth toward her again. Amelia was mightily disappointed he didn’t seem to be thinking about it at all.

Running the coffee machine was a mindless task she could do, lost in her thoughts. Grinding, brewing, foaming, all of it a routine that settled her nerves. As she poured the foam into the cup, she created a forest scene for him, hoping to bring a smile to his eyes.

Then she felt ridiculous.

She was hoping for a smile from him. Attention. She was doing all of this for his attention. Especially the gift that she could feel with every movement she made.

Amelia rolled her eyes at herself. She would deliver his coffee, then go take the damn thing out.

No. It wasn’t his fault she didn’t know he had appointments scheduled all morning long. It was her fault for her expectations. He’d never told her they would continue their sexy times in the office.

With a sigh, she turned and walked to his office, balancing the cup and saucer without spilling or marring the intricate design.

The inside of his space smelled so strongly of Charlie, she practically gulped lungfuls of it as she walked around to the side of his desk to set the coffee cup down.
