Chapter 7—Hoyt

HE COULDN’T FUCKING believe it. Kofi had followed him to Bear’s Cove. Yeah, the alpha had a brother here, but he had two brothers elsewhere, and he could do his job from anywhere in the world. Why did he have to do it from here?

Hoyt threw himself into getting his place ready. He spent every waking moment there. Kofi stopped by a few times, always unexpectedly, but never alone. He came three times with Chase—that man was incredible when it came to fixing things—and he came once with Dak to pick up a tool Chase had left behind.

One look from those brilliant blue eyes peeking out from under that black mop of hair, and Hoyt felt like he’d done some strenuous cardio. It was all he could do to get his heart and breathing under control.

Even if that wasn’t going on, his fucking pale skin revealed exactly how much Kofi affected him. Nobody should be that handsome or that sexy or that virile. Nobody. It should be illegal.

And his bear needed to simmer down and shut the fuck up.

Yes—Hoyt was fed up with having Kofi around. At least today, when the furniture was being delivered, he would only have to contend with Chase.

He’d gone out for coffee a few times with Dak’s omega, and he found that he really liked the guy. They were as different as night and day, though they had many things in common, such as a love of good coffee and an appreciation for the same bands.

Chase had promised he wouldn’t bring Dak or anyone else with him to help put together and move the furniture into place. Everything else was set and ready to go for his big opening in two days. The shelves were stocked. After the furniture was set up, he only had to come in and make food items to sell. His dream was finally coming true, and the excitement of anticipation ran rampant in his blood.

A semi-truck backed into the parking lot, and Hoyt supervised the unloading. Chase’s car pulled into the lot fifteen minutes later.

The blond man jogged toward him. “Sorry I’m late. Ezra has started this phase where he cries every time I leave the room. Grandma made me leave, but I don’t know. What if he needs me, and I’m letting him down?”

Hoyt didn’t want Chase to abandon him, but he also didn’t want to separate him from his son. “Oh. If you need to bail, I completely understand.”

“It’s not that.” Chase sighed as he ran a hand through his hair where it was longer on top. “Grandma said it’s normal to feel this way. She said he’d be fine once I left. In my heart, I know she’s right. But my protective instincts are screaming at me. Ugh.”

He set a hand on Chase’s shoulder. “Thanks for being here, but I’ll still understand if you need to slip away.”

Chase’s eyes lit with a merry light. “You think I’m looking for an excuse to get out of helping you.
