Chapter Twenty-Three

Collective

Rebekah stared at the globe. “I don’t get it. No one, not one single person has ever been able to evade this spell. She should have shown up no matter where she is in the world.”

“Well, she’s evading it.” Coray slammed his book closed. “She’s been doing it for three damn days now.”

“The only way the spell doesn’t work is if the person is dead,” Jacob said. Coray looked at him sharply. “Oh, sorry.” He grimaced when he realized what he had said.

“There’s nowhere this thing won’t reach?” Vincent asked, staring at the bejeweled globe.

“Not that I know of. But it’s not like it came with instructions. It’s about seven hundred and fifty years old.” Rebekah pushed it away.

Coray disappeared back into the stacks of books, hunting for yet another spell book. Alia sighed, her eyes tired from staring into the crystal ball. “Does this thing actually ever work?”

“Only for true seers,” Jacob answered. “And since you’ve been staring at it for a full day now and haven’t seen anything, I’m going to take a stab that you’re not a seer.” He dropped a book in front of her. “Here, try this book instead. There might be a spell in here we can use.”

“What I don’t get is why I got that tingle when I touched her the other day.” Alia pushed the crystal away and opened the book. “I mean, it’s not supposed to happen if you don’t have your powers yet, right?”

Jacob nodded. “Right. But she’s adopted. She might be holding out on you. She could be only a quarter witch or less.”

Rebekah shook her head. “That wouldn’t do it, Jacob. White witch or better, and not before her powers come in. We could probably figure everything out if we had those adoption papers. Including finding her.”

Coray reemerged from the stacks. “I could ask Susan.”

Vincent sat down in front of Alia’s abandoned crystal ball. “No. Her daughter is missing. This isn’t the right time to be asking her things like that.” Coray sighed and nodded as Alia opened her book up. She started flipping through the spells, looking for anything that could be used to locate Coleen. Even though the globe and spell Rebekah had always used worked before, Alia was sure either Coleen had found a way to elude the thing or she was being blocked by someone.

Miriam pounded down the stairs, breaking the quiet and startling nearly everyone. “You are not going to believe this!” She ran to each of them, handing out copies of the local newspaper. “Read the first article.”

Alia looked down and found the headline screaming at her, Local High School Teacher Found Slain. Under the headline was last year’s yearbook picture of Ms. Flora Woods.

“Ms. Woods?!” Coray gasped.

“Keep reading,” Miriam encouraged.
