Chapter 10

Jenny woke up early on Christmas Eve. The café was closed for three days but she had a special breakfast to prepare. Her son Nick was coming home for Christmas. Nick had been on a trip to South America with his college buddies. Jenny was glad he was coming home in time for Christmas.

Jenny made a frittata and a stack of blueberry pancakes. Nick arrived as planned and they had a joyous reunion. She introduced him to Harry.

“You have a fine son, Jenny,” Harry said. “He’s made me miss my own family.”

“Don’t worry, Harry, you will see them soon,” Jenny said.

Heather turned up next, ready to take the gifts to Carey House. They had loaded Adam’s pickup truck the previous night. Now they just had to drive over with the packages.

Mrs. Nash was pleasantly surprised to see them.

“It’s not a lot,” Jenny warned. “Just a present for them to open on Christmas.”

“I’m thankful for the gesture,” Mrs. Nash assured them. “The kids feel the same, I’m sure.”

Jenny and Heather drove back home with a smile on their lips. Jenny was already thinking about some errands she needed to run for Christmas dinner.

Nick was standing in the driveway when she pulled in.

“What are you doing out here in the cold?” she asked, wrapping her scarf tighter.

“Seeing Harry off,” he said.

“Where’d he go?” Jenny asked absently, taking her son’s arm.

“He said he had to leave,” Nick said. “An older lady came by in a big limo to pick him up.”

“But he’s coming back, right?” Jenny asked with a pang. “We haven’t even said goodbye.”

“The lady said they were getting late for some trip. She said you knew about it.”

Nick handed her an envelope.

“She left this for you.”

Jenny took the cream colored envelope and tore it open. She read it and sighed.

“What does it say?” Heather and Nick asked in unison.

“It’s a thank you note,” Jenny said. “Harry’s wife is grateful we took good care of him.”

“Do you even know this woman?” Heather asked.

Jenny nodded.

“I called her yesterday.”

“How did you know who she was?” Heather asked.

Jenny smiled.

“I had a hunch. Harry kept talking about a toy factory somewhere up north. But I couldn’t find it inspite of searching hard for it. Then I remembered the stories he told the kids. He kept talking about some woods. I did some digging and found a place called Silver Woods. It’s way up north, just like Harry said. The toy factory has been in his family for three centuries. It’s a family owned business. They live a very private life.”

“But you still found their number,” Heather marveled.

“It wasn’t easy,” Jenny confessed. “That’s why it took so long.”

“But how did Harry get here?” Heather asked. “And why Pelican Cove of all the places?”

“I have no idea,” Jenny said. “I’m just glad he is reunited with his family.”

“So I guess his name isn’t really Harry?” Nick asked.

Jenny smiled.

“No, it isn’t.”

Jenny got busy prepping for the next day. She was hosting a big holiday dinner for her friends. The day passed in the blink of an eye.
