ARI

Ari didn’t know what the hell had possessed her to kiss Xavier, a man that she had just met and a Castor strain variant at that. But being next to him overrode every safety precaution she had when it came to dealing with other supernaturals. It was like her body had known who he was even though her mind had just met him.

Whatever it was, she was unable to let go of Xavier's hand, not because she couldn't break free, but because she didn't want to. She was afraid that she would never see him again if she did, and that was unacceptable. It sounded crazy, but it was so hard to focus on the mission. She wanted to go somewhere alone with him to figure out just what the hell was going on with her common sense and her hormones. But she had a job to do first. She had to rescue the supernatural beings that were imprisoned in Warehouse Fifty-One. She allowed Xavier to lead her out of the dockmaster's office, through the little room where the secretary sat eating a burger and fries.

Once they were outside, she looked around to make sure no one was scanning for them.

"Over here," Ari said quietly, pulling them into an area where there were no fishermen but where they had a view of the dockmaster's office so they could see when Zeller, the supe detector, left the dockmaster’s office. "We need to rescue the captured supes before Protogenos sends that boat."

"Call Gray. He’ll send a team to either infiltrate or capture the boat. I don’t want you to risk yourself."

It wasn’t his decision. They should split up. Xavier should keep the dockmaster under surveillance while she led the Gemini Institute to the underwater lab. She would let Gray decide.

He answered on the first ring. “What do you have for me?”

“Xavier Storm and I are together.” She paused, trying to ascertain if Gray had ulterior motives about them. But when he didn’t say anything, she continued. “The organization behind the kidnapping is calling themselves Protogenus. There is a supernatural detector named Zeller working with the dockmaster to capture more supes. There are an undisclosed amount of prisoners in Warehouse Fifty-One. Protogenus is en route to pick them up and bring them to the laboratory. What are your orders?”

“Hell with that. Tell him to send backup,” Xavier said loud enough so Gray could hear him.

“Will you be quiet?” she hissed. The last thing they needed was to draw attention to themselves. They were invisible, but not undetectable—especially if Xavier kept shouting.

Two longshoremen stumbled into view. Ari grabbed Xavier and moved him quickly to avoid collision.

“Did you hear that?" one of the longshoremen said.

"Hear what?" the other said.

"I thought I heard voices."

“You know how it gets down by the water; you hear echoes all the time."

"Don't I know it. It's really unnerving at nighttime."

When the longshoremen moved on, Ari took an extra few minutes to make sure that no one else was coming.

"Activate your homing beacon," Gray said.
