Drayton, soft-hearted soul that he was, wanted to name the dog Zeus, but Theodosia told him to hold off for the time being. The poor fellow probably had a name already.

“But we don’t want Zeus to go back to his owner,” Drayton argued. “We don’t want him back in that same dicey situation where they run him after a mechanical rabbit until he has heart failure.”

“Of course not. But unless you’re prepared to take this dog right now, we have to drop him off at Loving Paws,” Theodosia said. “Helen Kirby, one of the volunteers I just spoke to, promised to meet us there and take special care of him.”

“Then what?”

“Then it’s up to whoever has jurisdiction over all those poor greyhounds.”

“But in the meantime?”

“Our boy Zeus will be taken care of properly. He’ll be fed, given a bed, vet care if needed, and lots of love. My guess is he’ll probably end up going to a volunteer group that specializes in greyhound rehabilitation and then get adopted out as a family pet.”

Drayton looked over at Zeus who was now slobbering on the shoulder of his good jacket. Drayton didn’t seem to mind.

“That does sound like a best-case scenario,” he said.
