CHAPTER EIGHT

Carolina woke early the next morning with a plan. She was restless all night and had little sleep, but her mind was clear and sharp. She didn’t intend to let anyone else in on what she had decided to do, but she had a feeling her secret wouldn’t keep for long once she arrived at the restaurant to start her day.

“I’m going to have to run out a little while later,” Carolina announced to the kitchen at large. She tied her apron around her waist and avoided eye contact with anyone.

“What do you have to do?” her uncle asked. “I guess I shouldn’t ask you that question. Probably anything you have going on right now revolves around the catering gig you’re gearing up for.”

Carolina looked up and met Levi’s eyes. She held his gaze for a moment and then looked away. “Yeah,” she said casually. “I plan to do some running around town to look for a few supplies for the gig. I also need a need to confirm a few more things with the client.”

“Are you telling me you’re going back out there to the orchard today?” Marissa demanded.

“What do you mean, back out there?” Levi asked. He turned to Carolina. “Did you go out there after I left your place?”

“What were you doing at her house?” Uncle Toad asked. He turned to face Levi. Carolina watched as Levi’s eyes widened. “Why were you out at my niece’s house?”

Carolina suddenly felt as if she had been dropped in the middle of a storm. “Really, everyone, I just have to go out and run a few errands. Levi stopped by just to check on me yesterday to make sure I was okay, Uncle Toad. Nothing else is going on.”

“Who said anything would be going on?” Levi and Uncle Toad posed the question at the same time, then turned to look at each other.

“Ugh, you guys are hopeless.” Carolina left the kitchen in a huff. Instead of taking a seat at her desk like she wanted to, she walked straight to the wire shelves and picked up a new packet of napkins. Several of the tables out front had already run out.

“Seriously,” Marissa whispered to her in the dining room a few minutes later. “Where are you going?”

Carolina stopped what she was doing and folded her arms. She let out a sigh and forced herself to smile. “If you really want to know, I plan to stop by the place where Daphne was cremated,” she said. She opened her mouth to explain more, but Marissa cut her off.

“She was already cremated! Isn’t that a little fast?” Marissa gasped.

“I think it is, but nobody asked me my opinion. I’m just interested in seeing this catering gig go off without a hitch.”

“Come on,” Marissa said. “Both of us know that isn’t all you’re interested in. Tell me the truth. Why are you really going there?”

Instantly, Carolina kicked herself for saying anything about the cremation. “Sure, there are a lot of questions I want answered, but I really do want to check with the funeral home about the catering gig.
