Chapter Nine

Poor Gargoyle Gary. We clearly need to think of something to do that will cheer him up.

“Mom, don’t you dare seek Vivian Rune out until I know for sure that she was the one to buy the other divination spell book from the antique shop,” I warned for the third time in the span on ten minutes. “Rye made a good point last night about us dealing with a hedge witch. Anyone could have gotten their hands on that book, or it could also have nothing to do with what happened on your property. Think about it. Everyone in town knew that the schoolhouse has been abandoned for some time now, and maybe some of the neighborhood kids were playing around on the internet and came across a halfway legitimate witchcraft site. You know, keeping secrets isn’t that easy anymore with the proliferation of easy access to information.”

It was going on eight o’clock in the morning, and I was currently pouring myself a cup of fresh brewed coffee. Liam and I had spent the rest of the evening last night in front of a blazing fire going over the events of the last two days, and we’d come to the conclusion that this entire mystery might simply be innocent in nature.

I don’t know how you can think of anything else but poor Gargoyle Gary. Maybe we should adopt him. I mean, he’d be a really great ally. He wouldn’t have to remain in his solid state for hours on end like he does now. Think about it. Now that the cupcake lady is out of the cheating wizard’s life, she no longer needs supernatural protection. Maybe this is all part of a greater plan by fate to arm me for what’s to come in the battle of the century, Raven.

“Then how do you explain the strong energy coming off the shamrock?” my mother asked, her mind clearly made up. “I don’t like leaving strings dangling for just anyone to yank on. Are you serious about a magical four-leaf clover just happening to cross our paths?”

Well, Mom was just going to have to change her obsession about dangling strings, because I didn’t want to upset Vivian Rune if she was innocent, especially since I would have to work with her at some point in the near future. A lot of us shop owners joined together a few times a year to put on major sales and so forth.

It was best to err on the side of caution and avoid calling her out.

“Gary will be fine,” I told Leo, wanting to fend off a conversation about bringing another golem into our home. “Mom, we both know that shamrocks have their own energy. Even a hedge witch could build on it or even amplify it. Going off the ingredients left behind in the shed, we can conclude it was most likely an individual who wanted to get back at someone else and couldn’t figure out how to actually get the spell to work.
