Kiplinger: Best Value Colleges

This long-time publisher of tax, economic, and financial magazines and newsletters has their Best Value Colleges, which comes out annually. The most recent list includes 400 colleges that meet its criteria plus another 100 that “just missed.” (www.kiplinger.com/fronts/special-report/college-rankings/index.html).

Their website also includes a handy “College Finder” that enables users to customize their search criteria to find their own best-match schools.

How do they define their Best Value Colleges? Kiplinger’s says, “All the schools on our list meet our definition of value: a high-quality education at an affordable price.” This includes:

Academic measures: Includes the student-to-faculty ratio, test scores of incoming freshmen, and percentage of students who return for sophomore year. “We award the most points for four-year graduation rates because graduating on time helps keep costs down.” They also consider to a lesser extent five-year and six-year graduation rates. Higher scores are awarded to schools that graduate a higher percentage of students who had financial need.

Cost: Emphasizes colleges with lower sticker prices, generous financial aid, and low levels of student debt at graduation.
