Chapter 17

Getting shot is never fun. Even with a bulletproof vest on.

It still hurt like hell, only not as much as it could have had the assassin aimed for another, unprotected part of Maggie’s body.

For her shooter’s sake, Maggie played dead.

Sade’s and Idris’s cries assaulted her ears, more painful than any gunshot as they bore witness to her being gunned down at the hands of a ruthless intruder.

With eyes closed, Maggie listened and waited for her moment. The assassin, deeming Idris and Sade as less of a threat, crossed the room and came toward her.

Like Maggie, the woman would have been trained to shoot any targets in the head, even if they were down, to ensure no mistakes were made. That no one survived an encounter with them.

“No!” Sade screamed, informing Maggie without realizing it. Gun still in her hand, she hoisted herself up and fired three rounds while doing so. Two missed, but one imbedded into the assassin’s shoulder, causing the gun to fly once more.

Had it not been for the element of surprise, her adversary would have fired first.

Undeterred from the hit, the woman pounced and landed on Maggie with her entire weight. She tried to snatch Maggie’s gun, digging her nails in and dragging them across her skin like a wild animal.

Maggie held on and fired the remaining shots in her magazine into the wall and well away from Leon’s parents, knowing she was moments away from her weapon being taken from her.

The shots rang through the small room with deafening ferocity before the assassin snatched the gun away. She turned it on Maggie and pulled the trigger, but no bullets shot out of the smoking barrel. Seizing the woman’s collar, Maggie pulled and attacked her with a headbutt.

“You bitch,” she spat in accented English, her nose bent at an angle it hadn’t been seconds ago. Blood spilled freely down her mouth and chin.

Maggie’s head pounded from the attack, and she blocked the flurry of blows the assassin threw her way as best she could, taking hit after hit to the kidneys and ribs as she tried to get the woman off her.

Dangerously fatigued now, Maggie stopped defending herself and stuck her thumb into the killer’s shoulder where she’d shot her, resulting in a wild scream of pain. The woman reeled and Maggie moved, getting in between her and Leon’s parents who watched on in astonished fear.

Even with being shot, the assassin still came at her with full force, not slowing down no matter how many times Maggie hit her.

Every part of Maggie ached as adrenaline and a deep-rooted terror for Sade and Idris sent alarm bells of panic through her and left her whole body shaking.

Knowing the odds were against her, Maggie rushed for a solution.

Glass cut into her knee as she stood, the remnants of the vase she’d cracked the man with. He still writhed in pain in the corner of the room.

A flustered Maggie hunted among the shards and found the largest piece just as the woman was on her again.
