Lexie rolled down the car window, breathing fresh summer air as she and Lucy tooled along the highway toward Jackson Hole. Wildflowers blazed across the fields and meadows. Groves of aspen and pine trees stood brilliant against the sky, their branches outlined against clear blue speckled with wispy clouds. In the distance, the Teton Mountains rose majestically with their jagged outline of rocky proportions.
Lexie recalled that as a kid sheâd thought the range looked like theyâd been cut out of cardboard. The French trappers who originally explored them had an even stranger idea of what they looked like. The word teton, in French, meant a specific part of a womanâs anatomy. The part that she had excess of and men stared at way too much. Apparently, those French guys had stayed too long in the wilderness.
Lexie realized it was too quiet in the car. âWhatâs wrong?â she asked Lucy. âYou havenât said a word since I picked you up.â
âI think thereâs someone following us,â she blurted, then curled her lips into a typical Sister Lucy pout.
Lexie checked the rearview mirror, watching the dark truck behind them. âItâs been behind us since we left Moose Creek Junction,â Lexie said. âLetâs keep an eye on it.â
Lucy nodded. âI have a bad feeling about coming up here, Lexie. I think we should just leave Fred alone. Itâs really none of our business if he and Eleni were having an affair.â
Lexie raised her brows at Lucy, but said nothing. Her sister, the famous town gossip, didnât want to dish dirt? Hard to believe.
âWeâre not just up here to get the scoop on Fred and Eleni,â Lexie reminded Lucy. âWe need to decide if we think heâs capable of murdering her.â
Lucy pressed her lips into a firm line. âItâs dangerous for us to be snooping around. Like that truck behind us. What if theyâre following us?â
Lexie glanced in her rearview mirror again. âIt could just be a coincidence the truckâs traveling this way. Donât get wiggy on me.â
Lucy muttered something unintelligible.
âWhatâs really bothering you?â Lexie asked. âThis isnât like you to be so quiet.â
âFor Peteâs sake. If you must know, Carl and Mitzi are trying to have a baby. They arenât even married yet. Itâs an abomination.â
âSo, they want to start a family and maybe their timingâs off. Why does that bother you?â
âIf they have a child, that means I will be a ⦠a â¦â Lucy started to cry, large crocodile tears rolling down her plump cheeks. âA grandmother.â
âThat will be great,â Lexie said. âYouâll love having a baby to spoil.â
Lucy sniffled, her expression forlorn. âThat means Iâll be old. Really old. It seems like yesterday I was young and dancing up a storm with Otis.â She gave a deep, reflective sigh. âHe used to call me the queen of the disco floor.â
Lexie considered that for a moment. It was beyond her to imagine Otis strutting like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. In fact, it was beyond her to think of him even having hair.
