CHAPTER 10

Lunch was an ornate affair. My house had been selected as the host venue and I’d spent the past ten minutes preparing a platter of croque monsieur for the group. The kitchen was filled with the enticing scent of bubbling, melted cheese which quickly drew everyone out of the living room to stand around the counter.

“Any news on your jailbreak sister?” Marie asked, less than subtly.

“No. I waited by the phone for a while, then decided to make some lemon and poppyseed muffins to pass the time,” Abigail replied, unloading a large Tupperware box of cakes as if offering proof of what she’d been up to.

“You think she’ll get in touch? If I was on the run I’d stay away from everybody that knew me, you never know which one of your friends will rat you out,” Trish said, her eyes flicking to me as if I had a track record of doing such a thing.

I continued cooking until the cheese was at the perfect level of golden and then started to serve up. Marie was pouring cups of tea and sneaking Fluke chunks of cheese that she’d stolen from the block I’d used to make lunch.

“I think she will have left me clues, a trail of breadcrumbs to follow. I just have to know where the trail starts…” Abigail sighed. “But you got all those supplies in at the apothecary now, right? I’m sure I could find something there that would help.”

“We need to prioritize the Wraiths, Abi,” Trish said. “Whatever we don’t need you are more the welcome to use. I can offer you a friends and family discount.”

“Not even free?” Brenda huffed. “You’ve got more money than all of us put together and even I do car repairs for you guys without charging.”

“Well how do you think I got so rich?” Trish asked. “Look after the pennies and the dollars take care of themselves.”

“You got rich because your rotten old husband died and left you a fortune,” Marie reminded her. I slid Trish her plate of lunch and tried not to laugh at the faux offence on her face.

“That may be true, but I had to put up with that sniveling little weasel for over fifteen years before he died, so I’ve paid my dues.”

At some point I should probably ask more about Trish’s late husband. She only ever spoke of him with disgust in her voice but if she’d been with him for so long then he must have had some redeeming qualities.

Marie snapped her fingers and a huge book slammed down onto the counter beside her plate. The cover opened by itself, and the pages started to flip frantically until they finally stopped on a section where Marie had left a bookmark.

“Okay, so we have items for the establishment of magical defense, we’ve got a seer that is slowly going ‘ghost blind’ – sorry, Celeste, I didn’t write it – and we had that earthquake last night,” Marie said, mostly to herself as she ran a finger down the page and read off what she found.
