CHAPTER 11

“Whatever you do, don’t let her get in the car!” I bellowed, leaping off the table and landing in a not-so-elegant heap on the wood floor. My paws scrambled out from underneath me in my hurry to get back up.

Luckily, Clint was faster. He bolted after Selene. “On it!”

“Call my mom!” I exclaimed as he disappeared, his footsteps frantic down the hallway.

I had no idea how he would even begin to explain the predicament to my mother, but it was one of those times where I reverted back to young Cora, desperately wanting my mom.

The front door slammed, and Pippin barked, confused by the explosion of activity and commotion. His ears perked as he looked between me and the direction Clint had gone, doggy confusion etched into his furry face.

“It’s okay, boy,” I told him.

He backed up, unsure what to do. I thundered after Clint and Selene, my paws still foreign, and my gait awkward as I tried to adjust to brand-new musculature.

I found the front door closed and Clint nowhere in sight. “Argh!” I groaned, staring up at the door handle.

Even if I could manage such a leap, there was no way my paws would be able to work the lever. Then it hit me—all the memories of watching Selene open various doors via borrowed pinches of my magic for the past several years flooded back. How hard could it be?

In short, very.

Despite my best efforts I couldn’t manage so much as a single spark of magic. In my normal state, using magic came as easily as taking a deep breath. It was automatic. I’d reach for it, and it rose up to greet me from the internal well residing within me. But trapped in Selene’s body, the same reach came up bare instead of plunging into a deep well of magic. I found my metaphorical hand scrabbling at dust and gravel. I tried again and again, each effort more frantic and rushed, spurred on by the hummingbird flutter of my heart.

“Clint! Clint, I can’t open the door!”

I raced into the living room, managed a semi-impressive leap onto the couch cushions, then scrambled up the back of the couch to peer through the window at the street. Clint had successfully kept Selene from getting behind the wheel of our SUV, but his foot pursuit was going less than spectacularly, as every time he took a dive in an attempt to tackle her to the ground, she blasted him with a peal of wind magic, sending him tumbling backward or pitching over in somebody’s yard.

I stared with wide-eyed horror as I realized a few neighbors stood frozen in their daily activities, also watching as Selene blasted Clint with wind spells, all the while giggling like a harebrained villain from a cartoon.

Something told me we wouldn’t be receiving an invite to the next neighborhood block party.

As Selene sniped Clint with another wind spell and put even more distance between them, I had no doubt Sheriff Templeton was going to be getting a call regardless of my feelings about it.
