Fen looked as though he had aged about twenty years since the last time that Lilith had seen him.
âIâm sorry, but we really havenât learned a whole lot more than we knew before,â Lilith said, searching his face for clues as to whether he had any guilt associated with Gwenâs murder.
âI feel so terrible,â Fen said. âI was having a bad day and I was in a terrible mood. When Gwen told me that she didnât have enough for rent, it was the straw that broke the camelâs back and I lost my temper. I went off on Gwen, and I feel so guilty. The last words she heard from me were angry words, and I canât ever make it right.â
âIâm sure that she understood,â Lilith replied, consolingly.
âI donât think so. The look on her face was like I had just stabbed her in the back. Whatever kind of bad day I was having likely couldnât compare to hers. She was being pushed in a hundred different directions by Gila,â Fen said.
âGila must have been very difficult to work for,â Lilith agreed.
âThat old witch even told Gwen that she was beginning to outlive her usefulness,â Fen said.
âWhere were you around the time when Gwen was being murdered?â Lilith asked.
Fen stared down at the floor and replied, âI should have been with her, I know. But I had hired an accountant to go over my books. I was with the accountant.â
âWhy did you do that?â Lilith asked.
âLayla worked for me for a few before we started dating and then afterward. I noticed that my profits were decreasing even though business had remained steady. I was pretty certain that she was stealing from me,â Fen explained. âI wanted proof so that I could take the case to the police. I didnât want to confront her. She terrifies me.â
âYouâre a wizard,â Lilith said. âSurely, you could defend yourself against a mundane person.â
âI might be able to if I see it coming,â Fen said. âSheâs the type of person to sneak into your house in the middle of the night and slit your throat. Iâm more afraid of her than I am of most witches.â
Lilith could see why Layla might be a wee bit frightening to deal with.
âDo you think that she could be the reason that Gwen is dead?â Lilith asked.
âAre you asking me if Layla could have killed Gwen?â Fen inquired. âYes. She had a very nasty temper and she didnât like Gwen. She thought that Gwen was coming between the two of us. If she was convinced of that and she was mad enough, she definitely could have done the deed.â
Lilith nodded and thanked him. Fen simply affirmed what she had thought about Layla. She was one terrifying woman.
After Fen left, Lilith noticed that the trash was full and decided to take it out back. She was startled to see Gwen standing in the middle of the alley, looking very much alive, although she still had a thin red line across her neck.
