Most coaches use a format or framework for their coaching that is based upon different types of questions. This is because they recognise that the most effective way of achieving behavioural change is to help an individual, or team, to create their own, relevant and acceptable solutions to their own issues. By asking questions – becoming what Naomi Raab1 describes as ‘an expert in not knowing’ – coaches help learners to identify and establish the patterns that will work for them.

1 Raab, N. 1997. Becoming an expert in not knowing. Management Learning, 28 (2), 161–175. In the pages that follow, we will explore some of the questioning models that support this process.
