Birmingham-Southern College (Alabama)

Birmingham-Southern College was created in 1918 when Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama, merged with Birmingham College. Southern University was founded in 1855 by the Alabama Methodist Conference, of which future Confederate soldier Augustus Aurelius Coleman was a member.7

Coleman was born in 1826 in Camden, South Carolina, and graduated from Yale in 1844, after which he moved to Livingston, Alabama, studied law, and entered private practice. In 1855 he moved to Greensboro, was elected to a district judgeship, and became active in the founding of Southern University.

Coleman resigned from the bench in 1862 to organize what would become the 40th Alabama Infantry and was elected its colonel. Under Coleman’s command the regiment served in the Mobile area in 1862 and was transferred to Mississippi in 1863. He and his 40th Alabama were captured when Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863. Coleman was released by his Union captors because he was ill, and resigned from the Confederate Army to return to Greensboro.

Coleman regained his health and resumed his duties as a district judge, but Union authorities forced him from the bench at the end of the war. He resumed his law practice and during the next several years became involved in state politics. In 1888 Coleman moved to Birmingham and was elected a district judge, serving until his death in 1910.
