On Empathy

On Empathy is an ongoing, participatory series of discussions and presentations founded in the midst of a transitioning architectural curriculum in 2013 at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. With a change in faculty, structure, and class content, the school found itself representing a disparate array of philosophies and approaches to architecture segregated by course code. In response to the lack of collective discussion between the range of academic methodologies operating within the school, the group aimed to facilitate a more sensitive understanding and encourage a more open flow of ideas. The group took particular inspiration from the writings of Richard Shaull and Paulo Freire, who argued for a freedom of programming within education:

There is no such thing as a neutral education process. Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate the integration of generations into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity to it, or it becomes the “practice of freedom”, the means by which men and women deal critically with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.

(Shaull, 1970, p.34)
