Monster Against Monster

His mace shattered the ground beneath it as Leonard brought it down again. Earth flowed, solidified, shifted, and changed at his whim, staggering the dragon. Its green scales were covered in dirt and soot, and smoke curled off its body where Samira had struck it. No matter what they threw at it, the scales had not cracked or even wavered. Meanwhile, the beast had been dismantling the jungle around them, making it nigh impossible to hide. A number of felled trees sat to his direct right. The branches had been seared off by the heat around them, but the trunks still remained intact. He and Samira fought the dragon at the bottom of a steep incline that extended to his right. Toppled trees and those that remained upright were still a bit further up.

Near those trees, the crew of the Greed Sun cowered. Joskine and Badlai, having found Amry with them, stood before them. Joskine screamed at the remaining sailors to get up. It looked as if they were standing on the edge of two different dimensions, one being lush, green utopia and the other fiery desolation.

He willed the earth underneath him to liquefy, swallowing the dragon’s back left foot before hardening it again.

Trapped, the creature pulled ferociously with its hind leg, cracking the ground. Its ironlike tail came sweeping around before catching him in the ribs and sending him soaring backward. Leonard landed on the balls of his feet, but the momentum still caused him to somersault backward, dragging his face and back through the dirt up the steep slope. He grunted as he slammed into the trunk of a thick, viny tree. The air rushed from his chest.

A grimace split his face, feeling a few of his ribs break with a sharp stab as he slid to the base of the trunk. Another crack of lightning sounded, and the rainforest around him lit up. Samira’s lightning caught the dragon in the snout, making it reel backward but otherwise doing no damage. Its eerie eyes glowered in her direction, igniting another explosion of blue fire into the tree line.

This was just one creature, yet it caused apocalyptic destruction. Leonard peered into the trees further down the slope and caught a glimpse of Samira diving behind a massive tree’s wide girth. Catching this movement, the beast lashed at the tree with its claws, slicing deep into the wood of the trunk. The tree moaned as it drooped, not yet falling. Fire devoured the once-green vicinity of the battle. Where was James? Don’t tell me that he can’t beat Vilch with a sword. Raslena crush him, he would never hear the end of it from Samira if he left James to die.

Frustration continued to well up inside his throat. This was getting them nowhere, less than nowhere actually. Samira was down there fighting a dragon all on her own, and he couldn’t even take care of himself.

“Useless,” his mother’s voice snarked, “You’re of no use to anyone. Thank the gods that your father couldn’t see his useless excuse for a son.
