Chapter 30

A s soon as I blinked, the darkness faded away, and I found myself in a completely different place. There was nothing but desolation around me, stretching beyond the horizon. Above me were the endless skies, and under my feet there was sand instead of polished stone. The sight alone made me feel the dryness of the air and an emptiness in my chest. I bent down and scooped up the sand, letting its grains flow through my fingers. No, this wasn’t the sand of the Wasteland. I hadn’t yet forgotten the feeling of the coarseness of its grain. But it was also not the sand that lay along the riverbanks of the First Circle, large and clean as it was. The last grains hadn’t yet fallen from my palm when I shuddered involuntarily, throwing up my head from the voice that suddenly rang out above me.

“Welcome to The Small Formation of the Trial of the Heavenly Sentinel.”

A moment ago, I was alone in the middle of this wasteland, and now a man appeared out of nowhere in front of me.

Long, steel-colored hair fell over his shoulders. His chain mail, sparkling with the gray and the blue of the plates placed over it, was belted with a wide strip of leather, secured with a huge buckle in the form of some kind of bird. High leather boots with steel toes reached to his thigh, and under them he wore tight pants with a metallic sheen. As with Kaori, I didn’t feel any strength radiating from him, as if he was also a spirit and didn’t possess any techniques. But he couldn’t have been anything other than another spirit. How could anyone live inside a trial chamber? Or wherever we were.

I put my fist to my palm and lowered my gaze as a sign of respect.

“Greetings, honorable spirit.”

But the man didn’t pay attention to my words and bow.

“The first stage of the trial will check the size of your focus. A Sentinel without a good energy reserve will not be able to fight and will fail even in a short battle.” The spirit paused for a moment and then reported in an indifferent tone of voice: “A medium-sized focus. You pass.”

I could only grin to myself. Who’d ever dream of comparing themselves with the Ancients? Definitely not me. I never thought about it, but fate brought me here. It was brash to equate myself with them, but this spirit didn’t care, because he didn’t distinguish between those who came to him. I was lucky that the average size of their focus wasn’t that of a fist, otherwise I would’ve failed immediately. If I were to recall the story of the Brothers in Ascension from school, then those who have passed it were few. But the spirit, who seemingly possessed spiritual vision that the tales attributed only to specific Masters, didn’t care for my thoughts, continuing his monologue.

“The second stage will assess your rate of energy replenishment. Even the strongest Sentinel must be able to restore what he spent in battle during a brief moment of respite.
