Yunnu stood before him. They were atop a mountain, the middle carved out and replaced with a flat checkerboard. Each square of the board had a different rune, and above each rune floated a small ball of True Essence.

“Akkoan battle chess is fought in multiple dimensions,” Yunnu lectured. “As the runes are activated and deactivated, the adjacent ones will change. These changes are predictable, if you know what you’re looking for, based on previous moves and activations. Each rune has the chance to activate a one time effect, such as generating a weapon of your choice, or allowing flight. They can also teleport you from one square to another. This means, at the highest levels, the game is fought in all four dimensions simultaneously.”

He gestured and the True Essence orbs vanished, leaving only one hovering to the side. “The presence of a single orb indicates the Mesh is not fully powered. It will not manifest the most interesting and subtle abilities. You will not, for example, be able to create an Assault Node. If you wish to do so, you will need a hundred times the current mana investment. For now, expect basic outcomes. Enhancements to your attacks, simple weapons, short-distance teleportation, and bodily effects. Do you understand?”

Ty nodded. “I’m following.”

“Good. Let us begin your training.”
