Chapter Eleven

I decided to stop by the British Tea and Coffee Company and see how my friend, Agatha Broome, was doing. Agatha was a British transplant and had settled in Sparrow decades earlier and opened up her tea and coffee shop. I made it a habit to stop by and visit with her several times a week.

“Hi, Agatha,” I said as I stepped up to the front of the line. “How are you today?”

She looked at me and grinned. “Well, if it isn’t my good friend, Rainey Daye,” she said, nodding. “It’s been a crazy, busy day, and I sure am glad you stopped by. It seems like forever since we’ve gotten a chance to catch up.”

“I know, I’ve been remiss in stopping by, haven’t I?” It had been nearly a week since the last time I’d stopped in and I missed my friend.

She nodded. “What can I get for you?”

I looked up at the menu board above her, trying to decide on a drink. “What is that strawberry dark chocolate latte up there?”

“Oh, it’s my newest concoction. I used strawberry syrup and mixed it with a chocolate sauce. It is tasty, if I do say so myself.”

“Well, if it comes recommended by you, then it has to be. How about a medium strawberry dark chocolate latte?”

She nodded. “I’ll get it for you.” She went to work making my coffee, and I glanced around the shop. It was late afternoon and there were a handful of people sitting at the tables, either reading or talking to one another.

“How has business been for you lately, Agatha?” I asked as she worked on my coffee.

She glanced at me. “It’s been booming. That’s one thing about coffee and tea, almost everyone drinks one or the other and business remains good most of the time.”

I nodded. “That’s good to hear. I like to hear when my friends are successful.”

She waved away the money when I offered to pay for the drink and set the coffee on the counter when she finished with it. “It’s on me. Are you going to sit for a few minutes?”

I nodded. “Of course I am. Come on, let’s go get a table.”

She picked up her cup of coffee from beneath the front counter and followed after me as we headed toward a table in the corner. “You don’t have to tell me twice.” There were two other baristas behind the counter so she had the counter covered.

I took a sip of my coffee and smiled. “This is tasty. I’m glad I ordered it.”

She nodded. “I’m glad you approve. I had fun making that one up. I wasn’t sure the strawberry would go well with the coffee, but it fits in nicely.” She took a sip of her coffee and when she set it down, she narrowed her eyes at me. “I heard there was a murder. Are you holding out on me?”

I chuckled. “Why would I hold out on you? But yes, there has been another murder.”

She leaned forward over the table.
