CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Luther peered through the small window in his Spiral dorm room on the other side of the complex. The dense trees and colorful animals were a constant reminder that he was in the jungle, but people streamed from the train station toward the hotel opposite the dungeon, far from the restricted-access staff- and explorer-only areas, which included the training dorms.

The overgrown stepped pyramid marking the entrance to the Spiral blended with the jungle. It would be easy to miss without the circle of burning torches illuminating the base.

Tomorrow, his party would take the next step toward vengeance for Cez and justice for Lili. Luther was simply happy to test himself.

Their arrival at the dungeon complex had gone smoothly. The reporter mob had been ready for them, and this time they’d given a fifteen-minute press conference and a dedicated ten-minute interview with Mateo Baez before heading inside.

The CE reporter had picked up on the futility of pressing them on the curse angle. He kept the interview light and breezy and focused on how they felt about training with the AOEG and its impact on a successful dive. Carl and Vanessa had delivered pat prepared answers that reflected their media training.

Thus far, the only issue had been a minor hiccup with the rooms that had delayed Luther getting into his, but he had no strong preferences, so it didn’t bother him. He’d been in his room for an hour, unable to decide whether he should hit a training room or relax until their date with the Spiral.

Luther closed his blinds when he spotted someone peering toward the dorms with binoculars. “It’s funny. All these people come to the dungeon to sit outside and watch the dive on screens. I understand the excitement of being in a crowd, but it’s like going to the Superbowl and watching it on a big TV out in the parking lot.”

A larger audience, both locally and otherwise, enhances mana generation, Cez said. That could work to our advantage. You should not resent their presence.

“I don’t resent it. I think it’s funny. Remember, it could help your enemy, too. We might be walking into his dungeon. You can’t be sure that your hunch about him arriving on Earth in the first year is correct.”

Perhaps. It is difficult to be certain. Eliminating possibilities while becoming stronger will work to my advantage.

“I have to ask. Are you seriously okay if this takes a while? You went from acting like we needed to sneak into every dungeon on Earth to being totally calm. It was such a quick change that I’m wondering if I’m missing something.”

This alteration of strategy has been some time in the making, Cez replied. Observing your training and your active identification of the strength of the most likely enemy candidate dungeons has reinforced that approaching my enemy with insufficient strength will result in me being unable to defeat him. My enemy is likely considerably stronger than I am. Therefore, I must resign myself to a longer-term plan.
