Chapter Six

“Wake up, Ida, wake up.”

It was Luc. Next to him stood Nigel, looking angry. I opened my eyes and sat up.

“I kept trying to tell him to leave you alone, Lady Ida!” Nigel fumed. “I did! He refused, said you couldn’t sleep longer!”

“Yes, Ida, it’s not safe to oversleep after the sedative I gave you. Today you can rest, and we can talk about what I have learned. For now, your hysterical butler can see to your breakfast.”

Luc smiled and walked off as I calmed Nigel and the dogs, who were also worked up because of the old fellow’s nerves. I asked the butler for my usual breakfast. I knew a task would make him feel better, and he left the room, quick to perform his duties

I took a bath and put on fresh clothes. When I came back downstairs, my food was waiting. Nigel pleasantly presented it as always. I thought of calling Luc to join me but then realized I wasn’t feeling fully normal yet. Once I picked up my fork to eat the eggs, I couldn’t control my hand from shaking. The stress and tension of the frightening event from the night before were still very much with me. I put down the fork and did my best to refocus and take deep breaths. When I tried again, my hands were still shaking, but not as badly. I was able to eat and drink my coffee, and afterwards, I went out and sat in the garden at the small table.

Birds were singing their inspiring and beautiful songs, praising a simple life. The human mind did not allow such simplicity, or did it? Being human, and having moral agency, was a great gift from God, allowing for the greatest good we could do on our planet. But it could also be turned toward the greatest evil.

After I had sat there drinking coffee for about an hour, Luc emerged from the house. He picked up another garden chair and came over to me. “May I sit? Are you feeling more calm?”

“Yes, please. I am…just taking in the beauty here and thinking about how we humans are capable of great good, but also great evil.”

Luc folded his arms across his chest. “That doesn’t sound like a very relaxing thought, but I would agree that free will is God’s greatest gift.” He leaned forward onto the table. “So, last night, I found where Guud lives. It’s a mansion on the edge of the town, opposite this one, all the way on the other end. It’s smaller than yours. The place was dark the whole time I circled around, looking into the windows. I think there is probably something going on in the basement, or maybe he wasn’t home. We can go there today and see if we can get a conversation going.”

“What about the man in the mask? And what happened to Alain? Oh my God.” I closed my eyes and put my hands over my face.

Luc patted my shoulder awkwardly.
