CHAPTER FOUR

They spread from her shoulders, a pair on each side, as thin and slender as dragonfly wings and patterned with silver veins. Several feet long, they were so translucent that the moonlight barely dappled as it passed through them. Cradling the egg with one arm, Julie reached back and brushed her fingertips across one. She felt the brush of her fingers on the strangely sensitive surface. She’d expected it to be soft and moist, but the surface was as hard and cold as glass.

She wanted to screech or maybe swear, but when she opened her mouth, not a single sound would come out.

Hat chuckled warmly inside her mind. Do you like them?

Julie couldn’t form a coherent enough thought to answer him. She stared open-mouthed at Alugon, then at Morgan and Bianca. Bianca was grinning like a jack o’ lantern. Morgan stroked her wings, looking vaguely jealous, and Alugon tipped up his chin, a small smile tugging at the corners of his long mouth.

“I have… There are… These are—” Julie spluttered. “I-I ripped my uniform.”

“That’s it?” Bianca screeched, clutching at the air. “You just got epic badass Fae wings, and you’re worried about your uniform?”

“Is my bra showing?” Julie squeaked.

“No one’s looking.” Alugon gave a booming laugh. “Are you ready to fly?”

All thoughts of bras and uniforms exited Julie’s mind. She stared at the dragon. “Fly?” A ripple of something rose from inside the egg, echoing in Julie’s mind. “I think Eggy’s laughing at me.”

Alugon sighed. “I wish you wouldn’t call her that.”

“It’s time to fly, Julie.” Morgan grinned, batting her wings. “You can do it.”

“I don’t even know how these work!” Julie burst out. As she spoke, new muscles flexed in her shoulder blades and upper back, and her wings beat softly, their hard surfaces barely touching. “What the… How did I do that?”

“The unborn dragon is showing you how,” Alugon rumbled. “She will continue to guide you. You can fly. Don’t overthink it. Allow the dragon’s knowledge to show your body what to do.”

“Okay.” Julie took a deep breath, then turned to Bianca. “Will you hold Eggy?”

“Oh, no. Uh-uh.” Bianca held up her hands, backing away. “I’m not touching that thing. I like my scary bat wings, thank you very much.”

Alugon stepped forward and lowered his giant head, his smoky breath enveloping Julie. “You will hold the egg.”

“Fly? With Eggy?” Julie stared at him. “Are you out of your cotton-pickin’ mind?”

“I have never picked cotton.” Laughter sparkled in Alugon’s eyes. “And you will not be able to fly without her. She needs to show you the way.”

Julie cuddled the egg. “I don’t want to hurt her.”

“You won’t. I will be beside you every moment.” Alugon held up a huge claw and touched Julie’s arm as gently as though he had fingers of flesh. “I will not let you fall or let any harm come to the unborn dragon.”

Julie met his eyes and nodded. “Okay.” She looked down at the egg. “We’ve got this, Eggy. Come on. Let’s do it.
