Chapter Eleven

The Bean There, Done That coffee shop in the middle of town was one of my very favorite places to be, as well as one of the best places to be in general. Gina ran a pretty tight ship, and her mother, Mama Shirley, scolded anyone who wasn’t on their best behavior. They generally were hopping with customers no matter what time of day it was, but there was a lull on this Monday in the early evening, and I was happy to have it.

I let Janelle pick the table, and I put my phone down to hold it in case anyone else came in.

I wasn’t sure how to start, or what to ask first, so I figured getting the ordering of tasty beverages out of the way was probably a good idea.

“Oh, my gosh, look who’s here! Mama Shirley! Look who’s here!” Gina was normally an exuberant person, but I didn’t think I had ever seen her so very enthusiastic, even when my brother finally proposed.

I glanced at Janelle, who was beaming, too. Then she and Gina ran to the end of the counter together and hugged like they were long-lost sisters. Very interesting, and perhaps an even better reason to have brought her here. Who knew I was so smart? Not me.

The chatter was hard to follow because they were both talking at the same time. The pure joy rolled through the air like a beam of sunlight. I hated to break that by bringing up the debacle we had just witnessed, but I didn’t have a ton of time, due to my schedule. Max would be home from school soon, and it was almost time for dinner and for Gina to close up shop for the day. Plus, I didn’t want to wait too long and have other people show up in droves to get the gossip.

“I love reunions,” I said while looking at Mama Shirley. She gave me a nod and a knowing smile. It was hard to get one by this woman. That I did know. She flicked the towel from her shoulder at me, then gathered all her chicks to move us to the table where I had put my phone down.

“I know Tallie wants our new s’mores hot cocoa and Gina needs to drink water if she wants to fit into that wedding dress she bought. Janelle, what’s your pleasure?”

“Oh, are you still making those chocolate malts? I haven’t had one in forever. It’s on my list of things to do while I’m in town.”

“Sit, sit, sit. You can do all the talking before the dinner crush comes in.”

Those malts hadn’t been on the menu in years and years, but Mama Shirley just smiled and went about her business after shuffling the two still-hugging women to the table.

“How long are you in town for?” Gina asked, sitting next to Janelle, still holding her hand. Why didn’t I remember these two were so close? I remembered the issues before Janelle had left, and how hard it was to know she was gone, but not to this level of delight to see her back in town.
