We run until the scenery changes from deciduous trees and fallen trunks overrun with moss to meadow and pine. We run until we’re haggard, bloody, and half on our knees. I collapse into the Forest undergrowth and August falls beside me, leaning in to rest his head on my shoulder. Gracie stumbles more gracefully to the ground and curls into a ball next to us. Her eyes are screwed shut and I hear her counting quietly as her breathing slows down. A single tear drips down her cheek.

“I want my mummy,” she whispers. She plucks an unnaturally blue wildflower from the ground.

August wraps an arm around her. “So do I, buddy,” he murmurs back. He takes her flower and tucks it into one of her braids.

They stay like that for a few minutes, August’s arm around Gracie’s shoulders, her head resting on his chest, listening to the steady drum of his heartbeat. Then they’re ready to go again. August pulls me to my feet, and I pull Gracie to hers.

“Let’s go home.”
