Nixon

Call me crazy, but I have never felt more useful than I do standing on the street holding this woman, providing a place where she can unravel emotionally and then pull herself back together.

She sniffles, and I can feel the release of stress leaving her body. She’s not as pliant as I can get her when she’s Natalia, but it’s not a miniscule accomplishment either.

How is it possible that this is the first real hug I can recall? I’ve never been a touchy-feely kind of guy, but other than the mom hug Sylvie gave me yesterday, I don’t think I’ve ever held someone. Especially for their benefit and not mine.

Fuck. I’m a selfish prick.

“Thank you, Nixon. Really. I know you think it’s nothing, and I know you don’t want people to know where the money comes from, but your generosity has been a life preserver for my family more times than I can count.”

Shit. Her raw emotion is profound, and it triggers a response within me. The realization settles over me like a house that’s been dropped on top of me. I was made for her. To protect her. To be my best for her. To love...I don’t let myself finish that sentence.

She lifts her head from under my chin, her eyes fixating on mine. Looking at her like this, where I can see her at her core, is as sexy as seeing her naked beneath me.

She shifts to her tiptoes and places a soft kiss against my cheek. “Thank you.”

This woman. She’s not the least bit uncomfortable offering affection. Her kiss was one of gratitude, and she’s not apologetic or regretful about it.

“Come on.” I grab her by the hand, because I can. Because we just shared a moment in the street, and from the minute we stepped out of the hotel onto the sidewalk, I wasn’t her boss and she wasn’t my employee. We were just two people in another city.

“Where are we going?” Her hand grips mine back and she jogs a couple of paces to match my pace.

“Just a couple more blocks.” No response. No hesitation. Just trust. It’s a good thing we broke apart when we did, because it was only a matter of seconds before she would have felt my arousal pressing against her.

“Here we are.” I look upwards and she follows suit.

“The Empire State Building!” She exclaims pulling out her phone and snapping a couple of pictures.

“Mr. Ballard.”

“Barry. How are you?” I extend my hand to the man standing outside the building taking a smoke break. My father has an office in this building.

“Can’t complain. Were you hoping to go up?” he asks.

“As a matter of fact, I was. Sure you don’t mind?”

“Nah. We just closed so you will have it all to yourselves. Enjoy. Take elevator four. It’s still turned on.” He announces over his radio that we are coming in.

“Thanks.” I discreetly place a couple hundred bucks in his hand. “We’re going to skip the tour and go straight to the observation deck.
