Chapter 12

Austin

Between signing books, shirts, and other swags, I attempted to keep an eye on my girl. But Gina kept disappearing into the crowd of readers. Even with the murder of Rodney and Chad, these voracious readers wouldn’t be stopped from seeing their favorite authors.

I spied Redd from two rows away. He looked miserable. His face was blotchy, and his red-rimmed eyes were still watery. If I was Penny Buttons, I’d send Redd away with his dour and dreary demeanor. He wasn’t helping her out at all.

“I think I’m done with you,” Deidra announced as she threw down the pen and rubbed her at her hand. There was an hour left before the signing ended. “It’s not as busy as usual. And we know why?” Her remark was as sharp as a pointed blade.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay longer?”

She glanced beside me, a tiny thin grin on her pixie face. “I think you have a visitor.”

I turned as Gina strode up with a brilliant smile.

“Did you miss me?” She tipped onto her toes and kissed me generously in front of all who could see. “I missed you.”

I pulled her tighter to me and tasted her sweet lips. “I did miss you.”

Someone gagged behind us. We both turned and saw Tammy, with a hand on her throat, pretending to retch.

“Ignore the bitch,” Deidra said with a snap of her fingers. “Why don’t you two get out of here?”

“Sounds like a plan to me.” Gina gave me a squeeze before she led me out of the signing.

Outside the event room, I pulled her short. “Where are your sister and friends?”

“The Babes are going to try to find out more about Molly and her association with Rod Stiff–but I’ll explain that to you later. I’m done,” Gina announced as she leaned against me again. “Take me up to your room.” For the first time, I noticed her eyes were bloodshot. There was a hint of dark shadowing under them. But there’s also a spark in her blue depths.

“Whatever you want, sweetheart.” I squeezed her tight to me. “Are you hungry? We can get something to eat and bring it up.”

“I told the girls we’ll meet up with them around two for lunch,” Gina said as they headed toward the elevator.

“That’s a good idea.” I smiled.

I pushed the up button, and the door opened right away. After she pressed seven, we quietly stood hand in hand with our own thoughts.

We remained quiet through the hallway until my hotel room door had shut. Then she was on me. “I can’t wait, Philly,” she confessed. “Kiss me.”

With the drapes still drawn, only a hint of light came from between the cracks. I didn’t get a chance to turn on the light either, as she jumped into my embrace and clasped her arms around my neck.

I didn’t hesitate and supported her weight, cradling her ass in my hands. Her legs automatically wrapped around my waist. We were eye to eye before I kissed her crazy.
