Chapter 11

It had been a great afternoon, and I’d successfully avoided my parents for hours. They’d been out when I got back to Odessa’s farmhouse, so I’d spent a blissful afternoon with only Uncle Albert.

He’d spent most of the time dozing in an easy chair by the window, a blanket tucked around him, while I sat opposite him, a book in one hand and a mug of hot chocolate in the other. Odessa had been working on the farm, and Earl was nowhere to be found.

Uncle Albert started in his chair, and his head jerked up.

I set down my book. “Hey. You’ve been asleep for ages. Good nap?”

He smacked his lips together and looked around. “Excellent. I needed it. After you left, your mom talked at me for about an hour.”

“Eeek! Sorry to drop you in it like that, but I couldn’t handle another interrogation.”

“No apology needed. She’s very persistent.”

“They both are when they’re trying to come out on top.”

His forehead wrinkled as he looked at his bandaged hands.

“Time for a top up of healing salve?”

Uncle Albert nodded. “If you wouldn’t mind. They aren’t feeling comfortable.”

“Let me grab the things from the bathroom.” The hospital had sent us home with magic infused bandages and salve to speed up Uncle Albert’s recovery.

Once I was settled in front of him, I carefully unwrapped his bandages and smoothed the healing salve over his hands, taking care not to cause any pain. “These are already looking better. It must be all the tender loving care Nurse Tabitha gave you.”

His cheeks grew pink. “You could be right. I can’t wait to bake again. It feels wrong not to have my hands in a mound of dough or be rolling out pastry cases for pie filling.”

I hummed my agreement. I was loving not being in the bakery and messing up recipes. “Before I forget, Tabitha gave me her contact details so you can see each other once you’re recovered. I think she’s got a crush on you.”

“Oh! Well.... I don’t know what to say.” He went beetroot red.

“If you like her too, I suggest you invite her for lunch or out for a walk when you’re up to it. She seemed sweet. And you deserve sweet.”

He bit his bottom lip. “I don’t know. Would your auntie approve of this?”

“Of course! She’d want you to be happy and in love again. And you’re not replacing her by dating. You’re just looking for a little joy. Wouldn’t you like to see more of Tabitha?”

“Perhaps I could have her information, just in case.”

I grinned at him. “I’ve left the paper with her number on it by your bed.”

He nodded. “Perhaps we could come up with an afternoon tea menu to make for her. You must miss baking as much as me, so it would keep your mind occupied.”

I unfurled the magic infused bandages and focused on those, not meeting his gaze. “Having a new routine is strange. As is having no place to call home.”

“You could bake here. There’s plenty of room, and I’m sure Odessa wouldn’t mind.
