Chapter 15

Andromeda lay on her back on the vintage settee, tossing a knife up nearly to the ceiling, and then catching it just before the tip of the blade plunged into her belly. She watched the knife spin, caught it closer and closer to the fabric of her shirt. Sunlight filtered through the antique casement windows, scattered into a hundred pieces by the whirling knife.

Evangeline had a house up in Magnolia, the same immaculately manicured neighborhood where Andromeda’s parents had kept a summerhouse until Jason had died in the upstairs bedroom. Evangeline’s house was a Craftsman-style cottage built of brick and painted dove-gray, surprisingly pleasing to the eye and perched on a square of lush green grass atop a bluff that overlooked the Puget Sound.

The first night, as Evangeline drove them to the house, Andromeda had nearly vomited in the back seat of the sleek black sedan, the familiar streets bringing a rush of choking fear. For a few moments, she’d thought that the Sidhe woman knew her secret already – that she was bringing Andromeda back to the house where Jason had died to prove a point. But they’d turned down a different street, the shadows of tree branches lacy across the streetlamp-lit pavement.

“I bought this little house when a wooden trestle bridge connected Magnolia to Seattle,” Evangeline had said as she pulled the sedan smoothly into the driveway, a wrought iron gate sliding across the driveway automatically. “There was no electricity. The air tasted different.”

“Oh, we traveled into Seattle quite a bit,” Evangeline replied. “We came westward with the Gold Rush, you know. There were always men fighting over whores and stakes of land and just because they couldn’t hold their liquor.” Her canines glinted. “Such exciting times.”

“Where’s the fun in going after easy prey, though?” Andromeda had asked flippantly, retrieving her pack from the back seat. The other houses sat silently on either side of the gray cottage, a lone light shining in a second story window of the proper-looking brick house to the right of them. A breeze smelling of the water far below wrapped around them as Andromeda followed Evangeline into the house, forcing herself not to glance behind her to watch Elijah. It was clear that Evangeline was the alpha, and if she’d accepted Andromeda, then Elijah would have to swallow his disgruntled growls and go along with it.

Or he’d stab her in her sleep. Either way, she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of making her look over her shoulder. They paused at the back door while Evangeline’s long white fingers sketched a quick pattern of runes. The tumblers in the lock turned and she pushed the door open.

Evangeline flicked on the lights as they slid into the cottage. It was still
