Rue de Tournon, Angles-sur-l’Anglin, France. A pencil study largely completed standing in the middle of the street. The street slopes down the hill towards the centre of the village and the perspective lines reflect this. Note in particular how the gutter line of the roofs on the houses at the bottom of the hill actually slopes upwards because it is below the eye line. Don’t make assumptions with perspective, keep checking.

This little oil produced at the side of a trail in Spain probably says it all. Dried grasses and baked vegetation close to, fading gently to paler, less defined colours in the mid-distance and then to the blue of distant hills and mountains beyond, all the while the colours getting cooler. The track and fence brings in an element of linear perspective and lead the eye towards the white buildings of Vejer but because they are so far away, despite being the focus of the painting, they can’t be over emphasized and are almost like a mirage in this parched landscape.
