My concern is to have an approach that is about a speedy gathering of information and rapid putting down of paint. In both cases the increased speed is not about an unfocused toleration of inaccuracy, rather the opposite: it is about using speed to help read and record salient pieces of information efficiently, knowing it operates as something of a filter. A rapid viewing of one’s subject only permits the key information to be experienced; it is with the prolonged gaze that an excess of information leaks into one’s awareness, confusing the reading of fundamental structure, tone, colour and colour temperature values within the whole context. With significant practice the speed of this method enables a much greater distillation and abbreviation of the subject.
