Although much of this shading will be covered up, it helps emphasize the dramatic shape of these flowers.

Bright yellow brushstrokes bring these flowers to life. Note that the petals remain distinct from one another while soft edges and traces of shading remain.

Filling the centers with a contrasting pale orange creates depth and visual interest.

A slightly deeper orange shadows the center inside and upper edge.

5 Flower Head Details

Using a script liner brush, add small touches of sunny orange to give the petals a look of subtle ridges, particularly on the shadowed sides. Other areas to target for touches of orange include the seams where the petals attach to the trumpets and any places where the outside ruffles could use a bit of definition.

Use a long script liner brush to take up a tipful of plain Sunshine Yellow and place a tapered, beaklike stamen along the top of each center cup, pointing in the same direction the cup is angled if the flower is turned. Note that the base of the stamen doesn't quite touch the ruffle, leaving a dark edge in place to keep each element distinct. While you have yellow on your brush, carefully add some short lines radiating out along the bottom inside of each trumpet's interior to suggest a pleated texture.
