This is another painting from the series from my trip to Holland. I started the under painting with rapid strokes of paint that had been diluted with white spirit. Firstly I blocked in the dark of the dunes and the beach detritus. The sky was a brighter blue on this day so I chose to use Kings Blue Light. This was lightened with Titanium White and the smallest amount of Yellow Ochre. The fast moving clouds were put in quickly using Titanium White that had been warmed with Yellow Ochre. I was careful to keep the edges soft and to help with the feeling of movement. Moving on to the dunes, I used a mix of Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna, leaving a lot of the under painting showing to indicate depth and undulation. Again, I was careful to keep the edges soft. The sand on the beach area was painted in several layers working from dark to light with Yellow Ochre toned down with Kings Blue Light and for the last layers, more Titanium White. The figures were dotted in last to give interest and scale. I painted them at a slight angle to suggest movement as they walked into the wind. Note how the heads of the figures are in line with the horizon. This is because although they are at a distance from me, their eye level would still be the same as the beach was flat. If you look carefully at the painting, you will see sand all over it that was blown up from the beach.
