CHAPTER ELEVEN
When Carlton woke up, he was in the back of an unfamiliar car. He blinked his eyes open and saw daylight, then quickly closed them. It was too soon. He wasnât ready to look at the world.
That wasnât all. Where was he? When heâd opened his eyes, heâd seen he was in a car, but the car theyâd been driving had been totaled when Ricardoâs vehicle rammed it. Where had they gotten this vehicle?
The car smelled like cologne. English Leather, maybe? No, that was a mental association. He was smelling cheap cologne combined with too much leather cleaner.
As far as Carlton could tell without opening his eyes, he was in the car of a man who spent a lot of time at a casino. Not a high-class establishment, either. Someplace tacky.
Where would Mabel have found another car? He didnât think she would have carjacked a passing motorist, although he couldnât be sure. Mabel was not a benevolent person.
It didnât seem the most likely explanation, though.
No, she must have taken one of the vampiresâ surviving vehicles. He was sprawled in the back of a vampire car, feeling like he had one hell of a hangover.
At least heâd slept, for what that was worth. Considering the pain behind his eyes and the thick, dry feeling in his throat, he would be at deathâs door if he hadnât slept.
Carlton slowly opened his eyes again, confirming that Mabel was driving the car and Amber was sitting in the passenger seat next to her.
What the hell was Amber doing there? The woman wouldnât die. He should have known better than to assume otherwise, considering how much heâd seen her survive the night before.
She was on the passenger side of the car, shifting uncomfortably but looking fine. With all the abuse sheâd suffered, she should be dead or crippled for life. Carlton didnât understand why she wasnât, but it didnât seem like the time to ask.
âShouldnât you be dead?â was not a great conversation starter.
Thinking about the abuse heâd seen her suffer, Carlton remembered his hands. He held them up for inspection and saw that while they were still raw from the workout heâd put them through, they were much closer to being healed than heâd expected.
One mystery after another, but one thing was clear. Theyâd survived the attack on the highway and were still on the road to Pennsylvania.
He closed his eyes again, thinking heâd doze for another minute, then wake up for real and find out what was going on. It didnât work out that way. When he closed his eyes, he drifted back into a deep sleep.
This time he had a whimsical dream in which he was beating vampires with a gigantic crowbar. Every time he hit one of them on the head, a chime sounded, and an ice cream cone popped out of its mouth.
Coming out of that dream into reality was disconcerting, especially when he remembered that he really had hit vampires with a crowbar. He caught sight of the crowbar.
