“Not ‘hell on Earth’ strange,” Gwen corrected, speaking in a mild voice. “Not that bad.”

“The first thing I saw when I picked up my phone this morning was a meme about an evil toilet,” Billie said, stretching beneath the kotatsu. “Tell me there’s not some blind idiot god interfering in our reality, Gwen. I dare you.”

“Your scrolling habits are not representative of consensus reality,” Brenna said drily. “I’ve seen your internet history, Billie. Some of the shit you look at for fun would make an edgelord degobiller…” She made air quotes with her fingers on the last word.

“Not my fault I’ve got good taste in porn,” Billie agreed with a grin. “At least it means I know how to pull off the crazy shit in the bedroom. Ask TC if he thinks I need to ‘sanitize’ my internet presence—”

“We are not talking about this,” Naomi snapped, holding up a hand. “We’re discussing a world-ending threat, not pornography!”

“I’m more interested in this Agartha woman’s true name,” Alison said, sitting up a little straighter as she spoke. “I’m curious how your Uncle managed to get his hands on it in the first place, and why he’d give it to us for what seems to me like nothing at all in return.”

“Isn’t that obvious?” Valeria asked, laughing bitterly. “He wants TC to kill Agartha for him. It’s immortal versus immortal, and Alfonso cannot stand to be in second place!”

Eva Fawkes raised her hand. “I may not have the same right as the rest of you to speak,” she began. “Unlike the rest of this harem, I didn’t know Alfonso—he was already dead when I met TC, or at least we all thought he was dead. But I do know about Agartha’s wraiths. A few months ago, one of them made all of you forget I existed.”

The atmosphere in the room grew intense. All of us remembered Eva Fawkes’ disappearance, just like my women remembered my reaction to her disappearance. Having a woman who’d just become a member of my harem snatched away before my very eyes had done bad things to me, things I was still trying to fully process months later. Suffice to say I’d let the caveman part of my brain off the hook for a while to run rampant.

“I don’t remember much of it,” Eva said, frowning deeply. “But what I do remember is truly awful. I doubt even Billie’s internet history could match it.”

“Thanks,” Billie said with a snicker. “I appreciate the support.”

“You’re welcome,” Eva said with a wink. “My point is, what happened to me would have been a fate worse than death if TC hadn’t rescued me. Unless we stop Agartha and her memory wraiths, what happened to me will happen to more bright students who want to study advanced magic. If not here at Marywill, then at other colleges of magic around the world.”

I was nodding by the end of it. “Eva’s right. We have a responsibility to make the world safer.”

“You just don’t want us to forget any more girls you’ve taken to bed,” Billie teased.
