“Difficult how?”

“Difficult as in, it’s hard enough to off-load several dozen campers and RVs when they haven’t been linked to potential criminal activity,” Naomi said with a chuckle. “We had a bunch of recreational vehicles, and we needed housing for those who’d fled the flood. So we killed two birds with one stone. Twelve Atwood Drive is the site of the Marywill RV Campground.”

I stopped in my tracks. I remembered that fifth-wheel my uncle left me tied up in while his goons drove me halfway across the East Coast. I vaguely remembered telling myself it would have been comfortable, even cozy, if the circumstances were different.

Still. An RV?

“Eva Fawkes is living in one of these… these fifth-wheels?” I asked. “Why not the dorms?”

I could feel Naomi shrug. “After the Flood, we kept the RV resort open—it makes a modest profit, and occasionally brings in tourists from down south. Students willing to stay in one of the sites get a special discounted rate. And they get the privilege of having one of the campers all to themselves, rather than having to share a dorm suite with roommates.”

That… sounded pretty good, actually. The kind of thing I probably would have agreed to back in college, especially if it meant not having to put up with other annoying guys all up in my business.

“Cool,” I said. “Thanks for the info. I’m heading over there now.”

I could feel Naomi thinking. Where was she now? At home, or out making waves in Marywill? Unlike most of the women, she had an unpredictable set of patterns. There was no telling what she’d gotten into over the last week.

“TC?”

I reached for the PC to shut it off, then thought better of it. I’d leave it running for the next person. “Yeah?”

“You think that Eva has something to do with all of this?” Naomi sounded worried. “Something to do with the hooblies?”

I couldn’t help but snicker at Valeria’s makeshift word for the amnestic Wraiths. We’d have to come up with some scientific name for them eventually, something portentous that gave them the respect they deserved. But for now, Valeria’s French slang term would do.

“She just might,” I told Naomi. “She knows something, Naomi. All of these documents I’m digging through—she got to them first. Right now, Eva Fawkes knows more about these Wraiths than just about any human being in the world. I’m wondering why.”

“Alright. Be careful, TC.”

I laughed. “I will. I don’t think I have much to fear from Eva. She’s about one hundred and ten pounds soaking wet.”

“Oh, you’ll need to make a phone call on your way to the Marywill RV park,” Naomi said.

“Who do I need to call?”
