âWhhh-at?â Dawn mightâve gotten a little southern accent in there after all. She was getting good at drawing out her words.
âYou make it sound bad, but itâs not like that.â I walked over to check on the cornbread. The smell of the fresh corn, sugar, and butter filled the air, making my stomach growl. âThat murder over in the new development was in his neighborhood, and he has a little job going around to mow for people, and he knows things.â
âKids are good at not being seen.â Dawn frowned. âI should know. Thatâs how I grew up.â
âReally?â I was a little shocked. âI never knew that about you.â
Come to think of it, I didnât really know a whole lot about Dawnâs early years, only her later years when she was in the fast-paced working world of the city.
Hank got up and headed outside, no doubt not wanting to hear me and Dawn talk about emotional things.
âSomething I donât talk about.â She dosed the collard greens with some salt before she threw in a couple tablespoons of lard. âBut I do have to say that Iâve learned to make some really good southern food because Mary Elizabeth is a great teacher.â
âDonât I know it.â I placed my hands on each side of her arms and peeked over her shoulder to look at the collard greens. âYou look like youâre a pro.â
âTell me about the murder. I didnât realize theyâd called it a homicide.â She hadnât heard.
âApparently, sheâd been poisoned from what Colonel Holz told Hank was in the sweet tea.â My words got a gasp from her. âI know. Someone wasted some good sweet tea,â I teased.
âIf Hank is questioning a little boy for clues, that doesnât seem like a good sign,â she said and walked over to check the cornbread.
âThereâs more to it than just the murder.â I quickly told her about how Hankâs job appeared to be in jeopardy and kept my eye on the screen door in case Hank walked up. I didnât want him to know I was talking about it.
âAnd that boyâs mother gave the victim some sweet tea right before she died, and you saw it?â Dawn was so mesmerized that sheâd stood there with a stick of butter and swiped the tops of the cornbread so many times that the stick was all melted.
âIâm not sure if she had any other sweet tea, but everyone saw it.â I took a fork and began to scoop the cooked cornbread out of the corncob cast-iron mold, plating it exactly how Mary Elizabeth liked it presented.
âEveryone?â Dawn asked.
âAll the girls minus you and Mary Elizabeth had gone over to Avaâs so I could use her stream as some research for the National Park Committee.â I proceeded to tell her all about how I also thought Gab Hemmer, Jerry Truman, and Courtney Mackenzie all had very different motives but enough to be suspected.
âSo youâre saying that Jerry Truman and Courtney Mackenzie possibly had motive so Jerryâs deputies could
