Chapter Eleven

Dax

As I stepped out of Gary’s studio, my nerves ran amok. It was one thing to be all hot and heavy in the moment and yet another to know that you were then going to have to talk about it. Would Gary push me to if I wasn’t ready? No. But not talking about it would be bad for both of us. It still made me nervous.

Storm being there and wanting something to do while his roommate was being entertained worked out perfectly. I was able to have a fun night out, made a new friend who had a better end to their day because of our adventures in arcade games, and had a bit of time to process how I was feeling before we got to Gary’s.

And now that we were at his front door, I was ready to both talk about what had happened earlier and get back to it.

I carried my boxer briefs in, not embarrassed by them. They might not be fancy or even close to designer, but they were a reminder that underneath my clothing, I was wearing my new outfit. I loved that every time they caught Gary’s eye, he was reminded of that very fact.

We were greeted at the door by the most adorable cat. The pictures Gary had showed me told me Fred would be, but real-life fluff was far cuter than anything captured on a phone—even if it was a gifted photographer snapping the photos.

“Look at you.” I squatted, and he batted at my boxer briefs. “See? I thought you were going to be this sweet little thing and you’re a fierce little dragon in disguise.” He purred and look up at me all innocent-like. It was freaking adorable. “Good thing dragons are my favorite.”

I stood up, and Fred put his front paws on my leg and meowed. “Did you need cuddles?” I picked him up, and he snuggled into my arms.

“That’s a first,” Gary said. “Fred usually likes to be adjacent to people, even me.”

“That’s because you aren’t a dragon tamer.” I went to let Fred down, but he was having none of it. “And apparently I am a dragon snuggle buddy.”

Gary offered me a drink, and we went to the couch and sat down with our ice teas, Fred giving no signs of leaving me anytime soon.

“Sorry about inviting Storm without asking you first.” Gary set his tea on the coffee table and twisted to face me.

“I’m not. It was a fun night, and he was a friend in need.” It wasn’t the drop everything to help them kind of need, but not all acts of kindness needed to be that serious. “And it wasn’t like he came home with us.”

“True.”

“Speaking of which, we should talk about earlier.” I closed my eyes, willing the butterflies to simmer down already. “I liked it—what we did.”

“I did, too.” His finger tapped under my chin, and I opened my eyes to meet his. “What are your concerns?”

And really that was it, wasn’t it? It had less to do with that moment and more with everything else.
