The palmetto tree is also called the sabal or cabbage palm. The trees played an important part in the Revolutionary War. Fort Moultrie, on Sullivanâs Island, was made of palmetto logs as a seacoast defense against the British. The fort withstood British attack.
Colonel William Moultrie was asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety to design a flag. He chose a blue that matched the color of the soldierâs uniforms and the crescent that was a silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. A palmetto tree was added to Moultrieâs original design. South Carolina has honored the palmetto tree by naming it the state tree. The official state flag was created on January 28, 1861. The crescent and palmetto palm flag flies proudly over the state today.
P is for Palmetto, our official state tree.
Itâs also a symbol on our flag, respected by you and me.
